“Well, well,” Zira mused as she circled Taka. “You’re not from around here, are you? You’re much too…clean. What’s your name, stranger?”
Taka puffed out his chest. “My name is Taka, Prince of the Pridelands.”
“Oh!” the female exclaimed. “My apologies your highness! If I had known that earlier then I would have formally introduced myself beforehand instead of following you for two miles.”
The Prince stiffened a bit and flicked his tail, not wanting to give away that he had been entirely unaware that this Outlander had been stalking him. “What’s your name, Outlander?” he asked coldly, putting a bit of emphesis on “outlander”.
“My name is Zira,” the female said rather proudly. “And if I were you, I’d be heading home very shortly. You wouldn’t want to be out in the open once the sun goes down.”
“That’s just where I am going,” Taka said, holding his head high.
“Well if you are really heading home, then you’re going the wrong way.” Zira couldn’t help but smirk at Taka’s terrible sense of direction.
“I know exactly where I’m going.” He got up and began to walk away.
“No,” Zira replied curtly, “You don’t. You obviously have no clue where you’re going or what direction the Pridelands is.”
Taka sprung around with bristling fur. “And you do? You’re an Outlander! My father says to never trust and Outlander.”
Zira leaned in, “You always do what Daddy says?”
“No!” Taka snarled.
“Bet you do!” she laughed, “Bet you’re Daddy’s little boy.”
Taka bared his teeth and looked Zira straight in the eye. “How dare you speak to me like this, Outlander? I have no need to listen to your insults or take your advice.”
Zira sighed and rolled her eyes, not taking him seriously. “Alright alright, I’m sorry for insulting you. I understand you must not get that a lot.”
Taka didn’t reply at first. He just turned his head and flattened his ears, remembering how his pridemates had mocked him so cruelly. “Guess again…” he finally said.
“Oh…”
The pair sat together under the falling sun in silence, neither of them speaking. Taka felt like such a fool for wandering into the Outlands and not even being able to find his way back, and he would be all the more ashamed for asking this female for assistance. He simply wouldn’t do it. And he only knew how furious his father would be if he discovered his son’s foolishness and disobedience. After all, Taka had only gone into the Outlands to deliberately disobey his father after the argument they had.
Zira eventually broke the silence. “Tell you what, why don’t you stay with me tonight, and then in the morning I’ll take you back to the Pridelands. You know you can’t be out here alone at night and I know my way around like the back of my paw. I’ll make sure you’re safe, I promise.”
Taka looked up at her, taken aback by the kindness she had bestowed upon him. “I’m not supposed to trust and Outlander,” he argued.
“Well too bad. Because right now you don’t have much of a choice. We can’t go back to my pride though, my father isn’t very fond of you Pridelanders. I know a cave we can stay in. It’s not far from here.”
“Won’t they be worried about you?”
“Probably,” Zira chuckled. “I’ve spent the night on my own before and I managed. But this time I won’t be alone. So, what do you say?”
There was something about this young lioness that Taka could not quite understand. Her generosity made him feel a certain warmness that he hadn’t felt in very long time and it confused him and frustrated him at the same time. He refused to admit it out loud, but Zira was right in that he was lost and that he likely wouldn’t make it through the night. Right now, he needed this Outlander in order to survive, and perhaps she would make a good companion.
“Thank you,” Taka said. “Lead the way.”

Took a break from portfolio stuff to draw these two! It started out as a boring picture of Taka (Scar) but I added Zira after getting the idea for their first meeting. I'll explain my theory for their relationship in future drawings. This was super fun to color
